LINCOLN SCHOOL APARTMENTS
Madison, WI
Addition and Remodel
The program was to use the existing building envelope to provide the maximum number of apartments, maintain the historically significant elevations and repair them as required, and provide off-street parking in the park that would not detract from the setting. The variety of spaces in the building offered the opportunity to design apartments of one and two floor configuration and with a variety of living arrangements, which gave individuality to each apartment. Lake facing apartments were afforded decks or terraces.
The parking facility was designed to be built into the hillside and covered with turf to conceal the parked autos from view and permit the park lands to continue in an uninterrupted manner. Another benefit of the parking facility was that the level terrace provided an overlook to the lake. The project as completed offers a variety of living arrangements and spaces that fit within the requirements of maintaining the historic value of the elevations.
The AIA has recognized the Lincoln School Apartments Addition and Remodel with the Design Honor Award. This project has also received the Capitol Community Design Award.
