LAW SCHOOL
University of Wisconsin
Madison, WI
Addition and Remodel
100,000 GSF
$18 M
The plan was developed as a three-story plus basement infill structure linking all components of the existing facility. The second level provides major grade access to a student lounge and overlooks a South facing terrace. The third level provides grade access from Bascom Hill and a symbolic location for the moot court which will on occasion seat the State Supreme Court. The fifth level is distinguished by a grand skylit reading room overlooking Bascom Hill. The plan is organized around a clerestory lit circulation spine linking all levels of the new and existing facility and connecting the South campus to the hill. The library is in turn organized around its own internal skylit circulation spine linking all levels of the new and existing library.
The building character is developed as a contemporary expression using new and traditional materials consistent with the mixed character of the hill and is expressive of its function, image and current technology. The addition facing Bascom Hill sits on a rusticated limestone base with the upper stories articulated by large glass areas at the library reflecting its function and technology. The administrative functions are treated with punched windows set within textured limestone panels matching the 1938 Law Library addition and complementing other structures on the hill.
AIA Wisconsin has recognized the University of Wisconsin Law School Addition, designed by BWZ, in association with Holabird and Root, with the Honor Design Award.
