CHADBOURNE & BARNARD HALLS
University of Wisconsin
Madison, WI
Renovation
115,700 GSF
$12.2M
At the Chadbourne & Barnard Residence Halls, BWZ has provided comprehensive architectural services from programming and design through construction administration for a core renovation and transformation in an existing eleven-story 1957-era building serving 690 residents.
A new three-car elevator core is located outside the existing building footprint to allow uninterrupted occupancy and minimum disruption and to bring daylight into core. Toilets were remodeled to full ADA compliance with gender flexibility by wing rather than by floor. We recaptured core areas for attractive lounge and study functions. The project included accessibility, finish, and HVAC improvements to Historic Barnard resident rooms and public spaces.
Phased construction began in May 2009. The building was fully occupied during the 2009/2010 academic year while elevator work was progressing. The project achieved substantial completion in August of 2010, in time for the Fall semester student move in.
