BASHFORD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Madison, WI
Bashford United Methodist Church conducted a feasibility study regarding physical improvements to their existing church. The Building Committee engaged BWZ Architects of Madison and Magill Construction of Elkhorn to assist them in the preparation of this study. Planning began in September 2002 and Church Council presented the study for approval in February 2003. Following approval, fund raising was conducted while detailed construction documents were prepared by BWZ and Magill prepared detailed costing.
BWZ Architects and Magill Construction jointly recommended a scope of work that included maintenance items, remodeling existing space, and adding new space. Maintenance items include asbestos testing and abatement, upgrades to the existing electrical service to meet code requirements, steep roof shingle replacement, and masonry chimney repair.
Remodeling items include reconfiguring the Sanctuary and Chancel to provide a modern worship environment, expanding the music practice and storage spaces, and relocating the administrative offices to a central location. A new gathering/narthex/library area is developed at the central Crossroads, the educational wing is remodeled, and the Fellowship Hall is expanded with appropriate storage.
An addition of new space located at the east end of the building includes a classroom, a food pantry adjacent to outside delivery and trash, and an entry vestibule with overhead canopy serving the parking lot.
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) improvements meeting code requirements are included throughout most of the new and remodeled spaces.
Site development items include new concrete walks, pads, and curbs, with asphalt paving of the existing upper parking lot only. The total project budget was approximately $850,000 including construction, furniture allowance, fees, contingency, and administrative costs.
